I made another change in the plan. The dihedral angles were measured off my old A6 and produced a good bit less span than the maximum. I changed the tip dihedral to 1 1/2" and the center to 3/8". I realized when building my second wing that the way to set the center angle is to glue the tips first, then adjust the center angle to give the correct span. With the 2 1/4" chord I set the span at 13 1/4" measured at the spars. If you set it at midchord you could be over the 30si max.

I took my old A6 to Colorado for the 2009 Pikes Peak Ceiling Climb and set a new site record of 5:47 (I think). CD Don Deloach said that was the oldest record since they started keeping track of them. I didn't take the new pieces because I was pretty confident of the old model and time was very short for any kind of experimenting. I'm hoping to get a whole new ship completed this week along with a kit to give away next weekend at the Peach State Indoor Champs.

I finally got my new A6 finished. I went a little overboard with the space between the motorstick and the motor and wound up overweight at 1.23g. The old one was probably at least that heavy with all the repairs that had been done. The old tailboom had been broken 8 times. The new one is a little bit stronger.

Do you have the plan for that A6? my last one died and I think it would be nice to get a new one going.

Can I ask what size rubber you were using in your A6? What sort of times did you get out of it? I have a prop at home that works well and I can use it again.

I'm not sure if this question was for me but here is the answer:

My new A6 pictured above was not climbing very well at the Indoor Nats (116' Cat 4) so I finally put my old wing and stab on the new motorstick and did 9:00 for third place. The motor was 18" of .050" 3/02 (1.0 grams).

I actually use about the same motors in Cat 1 sites. My times are usually in the mid 5 minute range.

thanks old bill, I will see if I can find a similar plan somewhere else then. Just a note, We have open indoor hand launched glider coming up soon. I might try and make something for that. Any Ideas?

Bill, a couple of questions...

1) you put the mounting tubes on the wing and fixed the pillar on the motor stick.  Is there a practical reason for doing it that way as opposed to the opposite?

2) I see that your prop blades are 100 percent trailing the spar. Is there an aerodynamic reason for that?

Putting the tubes on the wing makes stacking parts in boxes easier. I think almost all indoor flyers do it that way.

The prop blades are 100 per cent on the LEADING edge of the spar. They're done that way to make them flare to higher pitch under load. This has the effect of slowing the prop RPM's which conserves turns in the motor and slows the rate of climb.

I guess I should have checked this thread out a long time ago.
Here's my A-6 planes.  You can tell I'm not really going for
endurance as much as everybody else.  I don't even know what
they weigh.  I do like olbill's props, especially with that explanation.
Look for new props on my A-6's soon!  They both fly, the normal
looking one did easily over a minute in a high school gym.  It
bounced off the ceiling and basketball hoops and wandered all
over the place.  The stringless wonder did fast tight circles.
I only did a few test flights and haven't wound either up much.
                                     Mike
You may notice that the one is just a Phantom Flash with the curves
and landing gear removed!  (sized down a little.)
