B,

Looks like I am to send the Lil' Tramp on to DelO, but I cannot find a member by that name.  Is it the member listed as just "del"?

Gentlemen (and any ladies present) as I type this message, I raise my glass to all involved.  Where else can people of like interest from around the world come together for a common cause that crosses not only geographic, but political, religous and economic boundaries.  I am honored to be a part of such a great effort.

Lyman,

Yes, that would be Del Ogden, or 'del' on this board...

Wow, this looks like a great project.  Props to B and everyone else making it possible.

Where will flight #34 be taking place?  Seems pretty close to me.

Starting the World Tour was almost too easy to have any feel of a great endeavor.  Mr. B. put SoFiA in my hands, I looked at it, pressed one of our number into service as a winding stooge, wound and launched.  Very nice flying airplane, flys in nicely small circles but has potential for more performance than is suitable to this exercise!  Perfomance + Small Size = Lost.  All pilots should restrain themselves when winding.
The photo records the historic launch of flight #1.

   Happiness is flying SoFiA...

If only I'd ordered that Tee Shirt sooner!

Another person who's been a tremendous help with the World Tour is Lee Dammann (LDammann). Lee located, purchased, and built the shipping package for SoFiA. It is virtually indestructible, at a modest weight. The "schedule 80" type PVC tubing is much lighter than standard PVC.

An excellent job that solved a major problem. Thanks Lee!

Attached photo illustrates the custom foam support Lee made, and how the parts are held in it. Note that the paperwork wraps around the foam carrier before insertion into tube.

Congrats on the first flight! Can't wait to get it up here to the northest point on the route arrond the world. Here in Alta, Norway we have nobody doing FreeFlight so I will try to make some fuzz about this project in the local press. Myself are mostly doing micro RC, again I am the only one. But indoor RC are picking up Smiley

If the media pick this up I will post a link here!

Cheers

Perhaps not a practical proposition ... but if small prints of the latter two pics (or similar) could be clear-taped to the tube it might satisfy any curious Customs inspectors enough to deter them from opening the tube for contents inspection.  I fear that  handling and repacking, by those with no experience with such,  would likely damage the airplane

Too late for me to do it... the package is already in the hands of Pilot #2. But if another pilot wants to make the prints that's great. I think postal inspections are the biggest dangers on this tour. Hope everyone makes sure there's a "FRAGILE" sticker before shipping.

Just received the tee-shirt (thanks, Bill), so I can be properly dressed for Flight No. 27.

That's a wonderful and inspiring site, Bhagat.

Congrats to all concerned, and I'll try not to let you down!

Regards, Jun

Flight #2 is in the books.  EAA Oshkosh, in front of the EAA museum.

A big word of warning to all pilots.  This plane wants to FLY!!!  I did about 50 hand winds, just to stage a photo.  Upon release, she went up into the wind about 30 feet, and started a right turn down wind toward a pond.  What I thought would be a 5 sec flight of about 10 feet turned into a gut renching 15+ second flight to within 10 feet of the water.

Please be carefull.  She wants to go around the world in one launch. Grin

Shipping tomorrow to Lyman.
