Tim,

This brings up a consideration.  How many stamps can fit on a 5" dia. tube? How many Customs Dec's?

I think it would be nice to leave all the stamps on the package for show appeal.

Will each recipient add a short note in the package? If so, it may require a larger container.

dope, thread, and a thin delta dart prop & bearing with the prop cut down to 4.5" all sound like good ideas......one spare prop in pkg.....
Ed, it would be great to have the stamps all over; unfortunately some postal official like to tear off or paste over. But, we can try....even a few would look impressive.
As for shipping costs, a 5" tube would likely go from anywhere to anywhere for under $20. Maybe every participant could pay their shipping and make a donation to SFA to make a total of $20? To make it more equitable? I guess it's not necessary, but I'm always looking for a clever way to raise money for SFA. With 1000 members, this site needs the best software, updates, and compensation.

I like the idea of a 12" Cloud Tramp, nitrate dope to protect against moisture & warps, a thread along wing leading edge for damage control, a Delta Dart prop, and an extra prop in the package. If this fits in a 5" dia tube it should be perfect.

Here's an idea to solve the shipping cost problem: I think volunteers for flying the SFA World Tour model should be prepared to pay shipping costs and receive reimbursements later. At the end of the tour we can tally everyone's expenses and take up a collection for the cause. I can then mail checks or transfer via PayPal to reimburse shipping costs to each participant.

Shall I start building the World Tour model?

As soon as possible! As you know, given too much time to think, we SFA'ers are liable to justify twin-motor setups, 1/2" spoked wheels, and other shenanigans!

Great idea to start B and great idea from Tim.
Has anyone mentioned that it would be great if you could get it back to Genesco for the first SFA events? - will be like the Olympic torch arriving!

That would much depend upon how many stops it makes around the world ... averaging, say, up to a week in transit in many instances ... plus a time lag whilst each participant finds a suitable opportunity to take it out in flyable conditions.

Thinks - could a plastic tube be more serviceable than a cardboard one .. or too heavy?

Some kind of composite is preferable to paper-based...no matter how strong, paper breaks down over repeated handling.

Here are the beginnings of an epic adventure! The SFA World Tour model is simply a 12" wingspan Cloud Tramp.

Well, right away there are problems with the World Tour Model. The stab is to long to fit into a mailing tube if it's permanently attached to the fuselage stick. Any ideas on how to make the stab removable on a Cloud Tramp design?

Stab---2 cross-grain battens and a rubber band. A rectangular box might be more durable and easier to load than the tube. If the tube, then make a loadable insert to corral pieces.

I wonder if a clear plastic tube or a box with a clear plastic lid would help with shipping through Customs without damage.  I believe some all thumbs customs inspector is the greatest potential for serious damage to the plane.

Bhagat:  Maybe just a slot for the stab?  Like the old North Pacifics.  Actually one of their wing clips would work for the wings also (if you don't mind a high wing CT).

Lyman,

I don't think customs is going to be an issue...

The label will need to state what in the package and what it's worth.  Worst case, the person on the receiving end will need to pay a duty.

For a stick model, Model Airplane and $5 should do it.

As long as it's packed so that the drug/ag dogs don't have an interest, no one's going to open it...

Ya gotta have pictures...

Action photos at recognizable sites, maybe even some videos.

Whata blast!

  Hi all

I could fly it next / in the Olympic stadium in Montreal. My shop is 1 minute walk to it. I personally think the bigger box is better even if it cost more money (more surface for all the stickers  Wink ). I would not mine paying for shipping, if "B" has to take care of money it would keep him busy for nothing, donations could just go to Bhagat for the web site maintenance. Maybe all the flyers could sign it with the city it flew. Just a taught.

Well, it looks like the more info/documentation of joymaking each flyer provides...as long as it takes up very little space & doesn't add weight/injure the plane...would be good.
